Building a new custom gaming PC. In !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , I was hashing out my build with input from fellow Oppocomps. Part 3 is where I take a deep breath and hit “Order Now”. Gulp.
So here she is. Haven’t yet given her a name - like cars, computers deserve a name - but I have a tradition, since 2004, of naming my rigs after bosses in World of Warcraft. Note that this is a Micro-ATX build (my first).
System
CPU - Intel Core i5 6600K, 3.9 GHz, OC to 4.6
CPU Cooler - Corsair H100i GT
Mobo - GIGABYTE GA-Z170MX Gaming 5
RAM - Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2x8) DDR4 2666
GPU - GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 970 “Windforce” 4GB VRAM
SSD - Samsung 850 EVO 500 GB M.2
HDD - Hitachi Ultrastar 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB (in RAID 1 w. existing HDD)
Optical - ASUS DRW-24B1ST super multi
PSU - Corsair RM 550W Gold 80+
Case - Corsair Obsidian 350D
OS - Windows 10 Home
Peripherals
Keyboard - Logitech K800 wireless chicklet
Speakers - Creative Labs Gigaworks T40 II 2.0
Monitor - ASUS VG248QE 144 MHz 1ms 24”
UPS - APC BE650G1-CN
Total $3,091*
* In Canuckistan dollars (0.75 USD), includes sales taxes (13%). Ordered from NCIX. They have a retail location not far away and so I can save $60 by picking it up.
This may seem steep for a computer - I can see the Tavarish headline now, “Why Buy a $3000 PC When You Can Buy This Rusted 240Z Instead?” but I spent an equivalent amount on my current PC back in 2009, and it’s not only given my six years solid service without any problems, it kept up with the latest games almost to the end.
Games I’m Looking Forward to Playing
Fallout 4
GTA V
Rome TW: Atilla at Ultra
Mass Effect 4
Half Life 3

I’d say this PC will last your at least 2 or 3 years. And even then, it may just need a GPU upgrade. By then, who know what kind of crazy stuff we’ll have to upgrade into.

Should easily last you the next 3-4 years with minimal upgrades (maybe a gfx upgrade in a few years). Nice job!

Oh, more, I’d say. I’ve baked in some future-proofing by:
- going with the new Z170 chipset (future 6- or 8-core CPU upgrade)
- choosing a board that maxes out at 64 GB of RAM, and that has the latest M.2 SSD standard
- choosing an HDD and PSU that are very durable
- nVIDIA has a new architecture, Pascal, coming out in the spring that apparently blows Titan X out of the water. Went with a mid-range GPU to tide me over until then.

Thanks!
I will now order a sticker that uses your avatar and says “Nibby Approved”.

Hahaha thanks. Also order a Windows 95 sticker. Adds like 4GB more RAM

Here’s my build:
Intel quad-core 4790k 4.0Ghz i7
Nvidia GeForce GTX760
8GB DDR3 RAM
2TB HDD
$1400 USD

jeez, and i though my 1700$ alienware X51 was pricey....4 years ago.
I7-4770
8GB ram
GTX 670
250GB SSD
1TB HDD
main reason i ordered and didnt guild was because i wanted something small to fit on university desks.
can you beleive they stuff alll of that into the middle case, and that i’ve never had an issue with cooling or dust?

Yep, that’s pretty small, and, for once, the case doesn’t look like a neon alien head.
Was considering doing the same thing, ordering from a boutique, but the closest to my ideal build was a Maingear Potenza that was close to $4000 shipped (and no peripherals).
Size is one reason I’m really liking this build. The Micro ATX format has been out for a while but it hasn’t caught on until recently. Now there’s lots of parts available for it, and they’re the same as ATX parts. I find I won’t miss the extra room of a full ATX board and/or a Mid or Full Tower.

Nice, the 4790 is still a beast, you’ll be good for a while with that rig.

Or “This Sticker Adds 10 MHz”?
I really should add the Win95 sticker for the luls. I’d used 3.1, but 95 was the first Win OS of my very own. Maybe I should get a Pentium I sticker too!

yea, when I bought this, it was the smallest/most powerful.
it does have neon on it. those slashs on the side and the little alien head.
the mobo on it is entirely custom, and the GPU is actually on its side to the mobo for space. they have their own PCI 90 degree bend that makes it work.

When I hear “Half Life 3” this is what I am thinking.

I can see something similar on my death bed in a hospital. My last words being “Gabe, you bastard!”. My family spend the rest of their lives trying to figure out who Gabe was.

Half Life 3 confirmed.
Also props for Canuckistan. My Canuckistani friends are all living in places that are not my place for now, so I don’t have to hear their “Tim Horton’s is awesome! Go Leafs!” bullshit.
